Description
This NFT depicts blossoms from lignum vitae, the national flower of Jamaica and the national tree of The Bahamas. Lignum vitae is Latin for “tree of life” or “wood of life,” which is derived from the tree’s many medicinal uses. Its resin has been used to treat a variety of medical conditions from coughs to arthritis.
Found throughout the Caribbean and northern South America, it’s regarded as one of the heaviest and hardest woods in the world. The evergreen produces a blooming of lovely blue flowers. Unfortunately, lignum vitae has been exploited to the brink of extinction and is now an endangered species.
This is part of TERRARIA O&A, my series of animated 3D terrariums, and was commissioned for the “Origins” collection showcasing five terrariums containing the national flowers of five Caribbean nations.
