In 2022, Cole Sternberg departed from Iquitos to travel down the Amazon River chronicling the monolithic trees that hug the River’s banks. This experience and resultant imagery became the starting point of this, the Artist’s first 1/1 generative work.
Using generative and randomized processes, Sternberg’s series of commands painted, drew, positioned, colorized, layered, folded, shadowed and pixelated to produce collages that harkens to both the natural environment and the digital realm. The Artist minted thousands of potential works to ultimately curate his long-form concept into this singular piece.
It is both haunting and glorious, the palette muted and yet commanding. The trees regally present themselves, layering upon each other to create a sense of history, memories and the passing of time. Ultimately it is symbolic of Sternberg’s overarching practice of developing unique multi-media conceptual statements that question humankind’s role in the environment while marveling at the world’s inherent beauty.
