Description
Beyond the obvious round driveway in front of the abandoned château, exploring in Europe is synonymous with roundabouts. In North America, roundabouts are not as common. But once in Europe, there are piles of them – they are unavoidable. The first time we were in Europe, my husband hated them. The GPS seemed to be slow and would always tell us to get off too late, so we would get off on the wrong exit, or go around a second time. My husband did most of the driving in Ireland because I was too nervous to drive on the opposite side of the road. When we arrived in France I did the driving, and I experienced baptism through fire. On the first day, we randomly ended up on the biggest roundabout in Paris – the one that circles L’Arc de Triumph. If you don’t know it, look up some videos on YouTube. It was chaos. There were cars coming from 12 different directions. I was screaming, my husband was yelling, and the only strategy I could think of, was to mind the cars in front of me, and ignore anything behind me. Eventually, we made it out safely. Since then, our friend in the UK trained us on how to drive aggressively through roundabouts, and now, although there are still sometimes issues with the GPS, we are much better at navigating them. This year when we were in France for our second time, we had no issues. But this photo is a fond reminder that when you drive for 2 weeks straight in Europe, you will probably experience many more roundabouts than you will abandoned places, so you better be ready for them!
