Pudgy Penguins started their journey with the minting of 8,888 cute penguins that made holders feel joyful when looking at their wallets. Unfortunately or fortunately the original founder rugged the project. Ultimately testing the community and showing that they were resilient and had a much larger vision for the IP. To help with making sure the project wouldn’t fall into the category of a rug. Luca Netz acquired the project for $2.5 million(750 eth) to take over and steer the Pengus into clearer waters.
The huddle got together and decided to take over social media by deploying a strategy that would put the pengus in front of the eyes of many. The first step in doing so, was by creating content for the masses and giving the characters certain personality traits that could fit into specific themes. This strategy has amassed them a whopping 880,000 followers on Instagram, 118,000 followers on Twitter, and 7.3 Billion views on Giphy. These are incredible accomplishments for a web3 native brand. It comes to show us that with the proper execution, leadership, and proper allocation of resources. Web3 brands can immerse themselves into the lives of normies.
It speaks volumes that the success for Pudgy Penguins in Walmart is seen as a win for all of web3! Not only are they winning by having mass market exposure for Pudgies but have also included exclusive Pudgy world traits that include other large web3 projects such as Degods, Meebits, Creepz and others they are looking to add soon. By doing this it truly shows that they are looking to expose the world to other communities as well as their own.
As the penguins continue into a brave new world. They will continue to sell high end collectibles as well as affordable toys. With this strategy it will allow the team to cater to high end collectors and a low entry cost for new fans of the brand. It will be interesting to see how a consumer facing project like this will return value to holders. As it has not been done yet successfully to my knowledge. If there was someone who would be able to pull off a feat like this it would be Luca himself.
Lets not forget that a barrier has been broken down from web2 to web3. Pudgy Penguins are the first nft project to bring consumer products to the world's largest retailer and bring blockchain to the masses. To capture this moment we loaded our cart at Walmart and swept some Pudgy Penguins off the floor in true web3 fashion. This photo will be looked back upon as the trojan horse that onboarded and exposed new users to our very small and tight knit community.
