Description
In life no one starts as a high-performer. Regardless of innate talent, everyone is first a beginner. The Japanese proverb shoshin wasuru bekarazu (初心忘る可からず) instructs us to remember this, and not let excellence go to our head.
The protagonist of this animation is looking for his turn to play. He has put in the work to establish his skills, and he’s waiting for the right moment to strike. When he sees his opportunity, he shouts “aye yo! I got next!” and attacks the court. This statement is a reference to LOGIK’s life as a basketball player, starting at the age of 5 and later progressing to high-level Division 1 college basketball. “I got next” is a common refrain in pick-up games, establishing one’s turn to take on the winners, and one’s self-belief that all challengers will be defeated.
Having put in the work in practice and training, the protagonist lights up the court with a 360° windmill dunk that sets the net on fire. With this artwork, LOGIK is asking us to stay on the grind perfecting our craft —whatever it is— so that we can meet our chance with a prepared mind.
The winning mentality behind “I got next” powered LOGIK’s career in sports, and he carries this same self-belief forward as he takes a position of leadership among the next generation of artists.
