This piece captures a farm in Antrim Township, Pennsylvania, just after nightfall. The barn stands empty, its lights still blazing. Why is it vacant when work's just wrapped up? What purpose might this illuminated, hollow structure serve now?
The warm glow from the barn contrasts sharply with the cool darkness of the fields, playing with our senses. It's inviting, yet somewhat eerie in its emptiness. Does this light beckon or warn?
In the background, the farmhouse windows are lit, a truck parked outside. What conversations are happening inside? Are they talking about the tasks for tomorrow, or simply taking a break from work for a while?
The tractor casts a shadow against the barn as it stands guard in the evening lightโa tribute to a day of hard work now paused but poised for the new day ahead.
Above the barn, a flood light casts its glow, creating a halo effect. The trees, touched by this light, seem to come alive in the darkness. Are they guardians of this rural scene, or silent witnesses to the nightly ritual of "putting the farm to bed"?
In creating this piece, I used thick, impasto-like digital strokes to build texture and depth. The barn and silo are rendered with attention to detail, while the grass in the foreground is more abstracted, a sea of darkness punctuated by hints of texture and color.
The method enables the observer to concentrate on the illuminated buildings while also sensing the expansiveness of the fieldsโa delicate equilibrium between the familiar and the mysterious; between what is seen and what lies concealed.
As I worked on this piece, I wondered about the daily rhythms of life on a farm. How the shift from day to night alters the scenery and evokes various emotions. What stories does this farm hold, and how do they play out in the quiet hours after dusk?
"Antrim Township, PA USA" offers a glimpse into the quiet transition between day and night on a Pennsylvania farm. It urges us to think about the hidden patterns of rural life: the getting ready for tomorrow, tucked away in the dusk of today; the tales shared in the soft light of barns; the quiet conversations between the earth and those who tend it. My hope as an artist, when one views this piece, is that they're encouraged to stop and contemplate the ongoing rhythm of work, rest, and rejuvenation that beats at the core of these small farming communities long after nightfall.
